Located south of the capital Cairo, Luxor is amongst Egypt’s most ancient and fascinating cities, making Luxor holidays a perfect choice for any history enthusiast looking for their next adventure.
With such an abundance of ancient history and legendary sites across the country, it can be hard to pick out just one historic city as the ‘best’, but Luxor certainly has to be among the contenders.
As the site of the city known as Thebes in Ancient Greece, Luxor has been fondly referred to as the world’s greatest open-air museum – and it’s impossible to argue.
Temple of Karnak, Luxor
Out in the gorgeous Luxor weather, the must-visit sites include the Valley of the Queens, Colossi of Memnon and Remesseum, all found on the western side of the River Nile. The Valley of the Kings is perhaps the best-known archaeological site, where the tomb of famous pharaoh Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922.

Back on the eastern side of the Nile, there is plenty more history to delve into during your Luxor holidays. Luxor Museum showcases Ancient Egyptian artefacts, including mummies, while the splendid Karnak Open-Air Museum houses reconstructed temples and shrines, next to the Karnak temple complex, which itself should be high on any itinerary.
Luxor Temple and the Mummification Museum are also in the vicinity and well worth a visit.

For a really memorable activity during your Luxor holidays, you can even splash out for a hot air balloon ride over the city, allowing you to take in its fascinating sights from an incredible vantage point. Alternatively, opt for a cruise on the River Nile for another incredible, one-in-a-lifetime experience. It can be a truly special way to arrive at another city destination, Aswan, or simply a way to enjoy Luxor from the river with a chance to disembark on Banana Island.
