Holidays in Senegal might not be top of many bucket-lists, but with a glorious combination of dynamic cities and unspoilt beaches, there’s a hive of beauty and culture not to be missed.
The country’s capital, Dakar, is chaotic, crazy and endearing all at the same time. Its frantic pace gives the city a real buzz and atmosphere which really makes you feel as though you’re in the beating heart of Africa.
Fantastic museums, such as the Musee Theodore Monod, delve deep into local culture and traditions, providing a fascinating insight into customs such as traditional dress, masks and musical instruments. Meanwhile, the Maison des Esclaves is an important monument to the slave trade and is another must-see sight in Dakar.
The capital also boasts an energetic nightlife, with clubs, bars and the annual Saint-Louis Jazz Festival attracting huge crowds, while Mamelles Lighthouse is also a great spot for summer music performances – plus great views the rest of the time.
As fantastic as the atmosphere in Dakar undoubtedly is, it’s also easy to escape to peace and serenity on the Ile de N’Gor, to the north of the capital and only a 10-minute boat ride away. Here, you’ll find quiet, calm beaches on one side, coupled with fantastic surfing opportunities on the other, so it makes for a great day trip.
Senegal holidays also offer beautiful national parks to explore. The Delta du Saloum National Park, spread across 190,000 acres, forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is mostly made up of water, although there is also forest, savannah and mangroves to enjoy. Here, bird enthusiasts will find species such as flamingos, terns, Eurasian spoonbills and many more besides, as they take advantage of the rich biodiversity on offer.
