With a long, sweeping coastline, untouched islands and energetic cities to explore and safaris which are truly off-the-beaten-track, it’s about time magical Mozambique holidays were top of travellers’ wish-lists.

Most visitors’ first port of call will be the capital Maputo – and it’s a great introduction to the country. Let the chilled, laid back vibe wrap you in its arms as you stroll the streets, visiting Maputo train station for its wonderful, colonial architecture, Mercado Municipal for its bustling atmosphere and Tunduru Botanical Gardens for their vibrant beauty.

Head north along the coast and you’ll hit Tofo, a great spot for beach holidays in Mozambique. It’s got a lively vibe and is popular among backpackers and young couples. If you’re into scuba diving, there’s no better location for you to explore the breath-taking Indian Ocean and its swathes of spectacular marine life within. Tofo is also well known for its whale shark sightings, so keep your eyes peeled!

Just north of Tofo, Barra Beach is the perfect alternative for a more chilled beach break, but the real jewel in Mozambique’s crown can be found at the Bazaruto Archipelago. ‘Wow’ is the only word that can adequately describe what you’ll experience. Hop between the five islands, walk on the powder-white sands, snorkel in the turquoise ocean, spot dolphins, flamingos, crocodiles and turtles, and simply experience heaven on earth.

At the other end of the country, Quirimbas Archipelago is equally breath-taking.

For culture, Mozambique Island presents a melting pot of influences including Portuguese, French, Goan, African and Swahili. This fascinating area is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasting historical buildings such as Fortaleza de Sao Sebastiao and the Governor’s Palace Museum.

And if your idea of a holiday in Africa involves a safari, Mozambique doesn’t disappoint. Head to Niassa Reserve near the Tanzania border for a fantastic off-the-beaten-track adventure.
