Belize might be a small nation dwarfed by Central American neighbours Mexico and Guatemala, but write it off at your peril, because you’ll be missing out on an absolute gem.

Holidays in Belize will see you diving in the Belize Barrier Reef on one day, followed by exploring a Mayan archaeological site the next and then trekking (or ziplining) through the jungle – and that’s just part of the story.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second biggest in the world, only eclipsed in size by Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It’s an absolute dream spot for seasoned scuba divers, who can swim with sharks, encounter the hundreds of species of fish and coral or explore the Great Blue Hole – a stunning underwater sinkhole. Couples looking for a really special memory might even choose to take a helicopter tour over the Great Blue Hole.

Take a trip to one of the many offshore sandy islands surrounding the reef, and you can also experience the beauty of the crystal-clear waters by snorkelling among the sea life.

If dry land is more your thing, Belize holidays have got you covered. With acres and acres of jungle, wildlife sanctuaries and National Parks to explore, you’ll wonder how to fit it all in – and ziplining through the jungle in Southern Belize is an absolute must.

Other adventures include caving in Actun Tunichil Muknal, visiting a howler monkey sanctuary, tucking into delicious chimole and tubing through dark underground rivers in Cayo District.

Culture vultures will revel in the Mayan ruins Belize has to offer, such as the blissfully peaceful Caracol, which you can climb for stunning views across the landscape, including neighbouring Guatemala. As an added bonus, there are natural pools nearby which most tours will stop off at for a dip.

The ruins of Xunantunich are another good option and easy to get to from San Ignacio, a popular base for tourists.

See, we weren’t joking, Belize might be small but it packs a serious punch and Sunny Heart Travel would love to help you enjoy the experience of a lifetime.
