Also referred to as the rather alluring Cote d’Azur, the French Riviera stretches along France’s glorious Mediterranean coast and makes for a spectacular holiday destination, just a short hop from the UK.
Encompassing towns and cities such as Marseille, Toulon, Saint Tropez, Cannes, Nice and the principality of Monaco, there are a wealth of breath-taking beach breaks, city escapes and a combination of the two to explore.
Dreamy views across the area can be taken in from Castle Hill in Nice, which also boasts the stylish and suave Promenade des Anglais, an ideal spot for an evening stroll overlooking the Med. Similarly, the Boulevard de la Croisette offers an equally beautiful seafront amble in Cannes.
Of course, Cannes is renowned for its annual film festival, taking place in May, while neighbouring Nice also hosts the incredible Nice Carnival each February.
Due to the beauty of the Cote D’Azur, it’s traditionally been an area popular among artists, many of whom have based famous works on the local scenery. As a result, French Riviera holidays can take in numerous museums and galleries, including Musee Picasso and Musee Matisse.
More outdoors activities can be enjoyed at Gorges du Verdon – the south of France’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Here, you can enjoy an incredibly picturesque spot of kayaking or, for the daredevils, white-water rafting.
For idyllic beach holidays in the French Riviera, there’s no better place than Saint Tropez. Plage de Pampelonne is the iconic beach many flock to, but Plage de Tahiti, Plages des Saint Tropez and Plage de la Moune are equally breath-taking.
And if it’s wonderful coastal scenery you’re after, don’t miss out on a visit to Les Calanques, which not only has gorgeous beaches and views, but fantastic hiking opportunities too.
