For city breaks in Washington, a trip to Seattle is a must. The Emerald City (they all have such lovely names, don’t they!) is home to the iconic Space Needle – a 605-foot-tall spire with spectacular views from its observation deck and rotating restaurant – as well as the Museum of Flight, Chihuly Garden and Glass, and the Seattle Art Museum.
Lesser known than Seattle, Spokane is another great city to visit during Washington holidays. It boasts fantastic restaurants, impressive architecture and a craft brewery scene that’s well worth exploring, even if only for a couple of days.
Away from the cities, Washington state is awash with spectacular natural scenery to enjoy. Active volcanoes Mount Rainier and Mount St Helens are both incredibly scenic hiking destinations while there are also bountiful walking and trekking opportunities in the state’s national parks.
Not far from Mount St Helens, along the Oregon border, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area can be found among the beautiful Cascade Mountains. The area is not only awash with jaw-dropping natural landscapes, including points that offer views of both Washington and Oregon, but it’s fantastic for those seeking some outdoor adventures. With trekking, horse riding, mountain biking, fishing and water sports all on the agenda, it’s a huge adventure playground.
In the west of the state, Olympic National Park contains the simply spectacular Hurricane Ridge, featuring alpine-covered peaks and dense forest. While in the park, you can also enjoy beach holidays in Washington with a visit to the dramatic and rugged Ruby Beach, from where stunning sunsets can be seen.
Washington also includes a number of islands, including Orcas Island (with Mount Constitution, rolling hills, tranquil lakes and cascading waterfalls), San Juan (great for orca-spotting) and Bainbridge (featuring wineries and craft breweries).
From the Big Apple to the Golden Gate Bridge we’ve got a ten gallon hat full of great American holidays
