Where to go & What to see

As it’s is famed for its imposing and iconic Golden Gate Bridge, city breaks in San Francisco simply must include a walk across the Golden Gate Strait. The bridge connects San Fran with Marin, just two miles to the north, so it’s very walkable. The views back across San Francisco from the Marin Headlands are spectacular too.

Back on the San Francisco side, the nearby Crissy Field is a beautiful spot from which to admire the bridge, go for a jog or simply watch the world go by – plus it also boasts the sandy Crissy Field East Beach.

Another must-see in the city is Alcatraz. The former prison, located off-shore on Alcatraz Island, once had famous gangster Al Capone among its residents and was renowned for its numerous failed escape attempts.

Those looking for spectacular views can head just out of town to the Twin Peaks, where you can climb to the top of the 282-metre hills for breath-taking sunrise views of the city.

Among the iconic landmarks, one of the most enthralling things about San Francisco is its array of distinctive neighbourhoods. Chinatown is North America’s oldest Chinese community and the largest Chinese neighbourhood outside Asia.

Culture vultures can flock to the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Legion of Honour Museum, which houses works by artists such as Rembrandt, Monet and Picasso, while the Walt Disney Family Museum is a must during family holidays in San Francisco.
