Where to go & What to see

Football fans can take a tour of the world famous Santiago Bernabeu stadium, home of Real Madrid. Sit in the changing rooms like legends Ronaldo, Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, visit the vast and palatial trophy room and take in stunning panoramic views of the pitch.

Once you’ve had your football fix, soak up a different type of atmosphere at Plaza Mayor and people-watch over a coffee or glass of Rioja.

Culture vultures also have a wealth of options to quench their thirst during Madrid holidays. The Prado National Museum boasts a world-class European art collection, while the Royal Palace of Madrid is as spectacular on the inside as its outer facade.

To escape the hustle and bustle of the capital’s main sights for a while and bask in the warm Madrid weather, take some time to stroll around and admire the beauty at El Retiro Park, or head to the city’s biggest park, Casa de Campo.

Ideal for family holidays in Madrid, Casa de Campo houses the Parque de Atracciones de Madrid – a theme park providing a great day out, with rollercoasters, water rides and plenty more to keep the kids busy. Madrid’s zoo and aquarium are also located within Casa de Campo, for those not keen on an adrenaline rush.

Madrid city breaks are also perfect for simply hopping from bar to bar, sampling the local beers and nibbling on tapas. It is custom in Spain for drinks to be served with a small plate of food. To be honest, we’ve heard of worse ways to pass the time! So, it’s a great way to not only check out various local establishments but also to sample lots of different dishes too.

For something more substantial of an evening, make sure you find somewhere to share a paella and a jug of sangria. Restaurante Samm, towards the north of the city, comes highly recommended.
