Lanzarote hasn’t always enjoyed the best of reputations as a holiday destination, but times are changing and the true gems this Canary island has to offer are starting to be uncovered. Sure, there are beaches and resorts aplenty if that’s your thing, but Lanzarote holidays have plenty more up their sleeve too, so don’t miss out.

Where to go & What to see

Timanfaya National Park is volcano-central! Luckily, they’ve all been dormant for some time, but between 1730-36, eruptions from more than 100 of them helped create this stunning landscape, which is now a national park. Bus tours operate around the area, but there are plenty of hiking trails to enjoy too.

In the adjacent Los Volcanes Natural Park, you can even walk around the inside of the crater of Volcan El Cuervo.

Just south of the national parks, head to the coast to explore Atlantico Museum – a really impressive underwater museum with sculptures and artificial reefs, requiring a 12-metre dive to see.

On the other side of Lanzarote, Cueva de los Verdes (Green Caves) is a spectacular four-mile-long lava tube, dating back thousands of years, while not far away, the Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden) makes for a good couple of hours.

For family holidays in Lanzarote, Rancho Texas is popular for its animals and shows, while Aquapark is ideal for cooling off from the hot Lanzarote weather. The Museum of Piracy is located inside a 16th-century fortress, set on a volcano. How many different ways can an attraction be cool?!

The Beaches

Of course, there are plenty of great Lanzarote beach holidays to be enjoyed too. Puerto del Carmen is the most popular beach destination on the island, which means it gets busy. There is, however, plenty to do in the area, from bars and restaurants to Rancho Texas and an open-air cinema.

Playa de Papagayo is a great spot if you’re after somewhere quieter. A series of seven small beaches, separated by lava rock, looking out onto crystal-clear waters, it’s perfect for snorkeling too.

For a really unique beach experience, head to Playa del Charco, where you’ll find not only black sands but red cliffs and a green lagoon. Unfortunately, there’s no access to the beach itself, but the viewpoint above makes for stunning photographs.
