The Beaches

With rugged coast intermingled with the spectacular beaches, Fuerteventura holidays are also popular among water sports enthusiasts. Flag Beach is a particular draw for surfers, while Sotavento Beach is where the Windsurfing Championships take place every year, so it’s fantastic for heading out on the water.

Activities on dry land can be enjoyed at Corralejo Natural Park. Jump in a sand buggy and explore the dunes, or pick up a boat over to Isla de Lobos for fantastic hiking routes. Those looking for a more strenuous workout can hike to the top of Pico de la Zarza. At just over 800 metres, it’s the highest point on the island, rewarding you with spectacular views when you reach the summit.

For more relaxing beach holidays in Fuerteventura, Cofete Beach is simply spectacular for its miles of golden sands. It’s not recommended to swim here, but that just ensures the beach remains quiet for those who choose to visit.

Where to go & What to see

Perfect for family holidays in Fuerteventura, pay a visit to Playa Concha and the Contillo lagoons with their gorgeous turquoise waters, ideal for taking a dip.

The island’s coast also boasts stunning natural features such as the Ajuy caves, which are not only great for exploring but afterwards you can tuck into some deliciously fresh fish in local restaurants as a reward for your exploits.

To see a bit more of traditional Fuerteventura, take some time in the little town of Betancuria, where you can wander the cobbled streets, check out the quaint buildings and church, and rest your feet with a pit stop at one of the town’s restaurants. While you’re here, it’s a good spot to try Majorero cheese, made locally from the milk of Canary Islands’ goats.

The island also has several windmills to spot. A good one to try and visit is Antigua Windmill, as you can go inside and see it in action.
