An Overview

Portugal’s‘ capital city certainly has it all, with an enticing mixture of Lisbon city breaks and Lisbon beach holidays available to suit all holiday types. Boasting plenty to offer in terms of attractions, historic sites, culture and activities, Lisbon is also in close proximity to stunning sandy beaches, great for family getaways.

What to eat

Another of Lisbon’s big selling points is the food. Cheap, fresh and utterly delicious, the seafood, in particular, is a tourist attraction in its own right! When in season, sardines are a staple and holidays in Lisbon simply must include a trip to Belem, where you’ll find the home of famous pasteis de nata, at Pasteis de Belem. The queues are well worth it!

What to do & Where to go

While in Belem, there are also historic sites to explore, including the Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower and the Discoveries Monument. Then simply hop on a boat to head back to the city centre, enjoying great views from the River Tagus.

Back in the centre, couples can enjoy further spectacular views from the top of the Santa Justa lift, while many visitors take advantage of public transport as a cheap way to see the main sights whilst enjoying their Lisbon city breaks. Tram 28 follows a popular tourist route but does get extremely busy, so Tram 12 is a good alternative to see Se Cathedral, St Anthony’s Church and the Santa Luzia viewpoint.

Another excellent vantage point is from the top of Parque Eduardo VII, as you look out to the nearby statue of the Marquis of Pombal and out across the Tagus.

It might be a little way out of the city centre, but Parque das Nacoes is a great spot for family holidays in Lisbon. With Europe’s largest indoor aquarium, a cable car, water garden and opportunities to learn about famous explorer Vasco da Gama, it’s an ideal day out with kids.

Beaches

You’ll also need to head out of town for beach holidays in Lisbon, but there are plenty of beautiful options inside 45 minutes, and most can be reached by public transport. Cascais, a quaint fishing town, offers not only gorgeous sandy beaches but also wonderful seafood restaurants.
