Where to go & What to see

Venice is Italy’s single most popular destination among foreign visitors, not least for Romantic couples’ holidays in Italy. With its peaceful canals and gondola rides, it makes for a really interesting city to visit, simply because it’s a little different. From the water, you can take a leisurely trip past many of the key sights, including Doge’s Palace, Bridge of Sighs and Ponte di Rialto. If you’re looking for cheap holidays in Italy, Venice isn’t off the table but try to steer clear from the main streets when it comes to grabbing lunch and dinner.

Alongside Venice as one of the most popular city breaks in Italy, is unsurprisingly Rome. Teeming with history and culture, it’s little wonder so many choose the capital for a long weekend escape. From the Colosseum to the Pantheon, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and so much more besides, there’s a plethora of things to see and do.

Beyond the cities and day trips to the likes of Pompei and Pisa, Italy boasts wonderful countryside and coastal resorts. The island of Sardinia is popular among honeymooners, thanks to its upmarket hotels and spectacular beaches, worthy of challenging anything the Caribbean has to offer.

Elsewhere, the picturesque Amalfi Coast is awash with glorious resorts, perfect for relaxing with a good book and glass of wine, while gazing out across the twinkling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The collection of towns and villages along the coastline, renowned for their characteristic steep cliffs decorated with colourful houses, includes the likes of Sorrento, Atrani and Positano.

For more rest and relaxation, the north of Italy offers something special. Lake Como, Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore are incredibly popular and not without reason, but the lesser known Lake Orta and Lake Iseo are equally as idyllic, with wonderful walking and cycling routes to boot.

Those looking for skiing holidays in Italy will also want to base themselves in the north of the country, where the Italian Alps provide some outstanding ski resorts, such as Alta Badia, Borimo and the truly breath-taking Cortina d’Ampezzo.
