Chamonix

France, Chamonix

An Overview

Renowned as a spectacular ski resort at the base of Mont Blanc, holidays in Chamonix are often written off by non-skiers. But even if you’re not keen on zooming downhill on two planks of wood, there’s an abundance of fantastic things to do in Chamonix to make it a great destination for all.

Things to do

Of course, skiing is the primary activity in Chamonix and it boasts one of the longest ski seasons in France. With plenty of different ski areas and slopes, all abilities are catered for, so you’re bound to find the perfect spot to suit you and your party.

Le Savoy is perfect for infants while for adult beginners, Les Planards might be more appropriate. This is also a great starting point for family holidays in Chamonix. Those with a bit of skiing experience should head to Les Houches, while Grands Montets presents a great challenge for advanced skiers. Meanwhile, those looking for a thrill should give Brevent/Flegere a go. Vallee Blanche is the spot for experienced off-piste pros.

Those who fancy an adrenaline rush without the skiing part can have a go on the Chamonix Luge Alpine Coaster, while for something a little more relaxing, try the Mont Blanc Tramway for spectacular mountain views.

Mer de Glace is a must-visit if you can tear yourself away from the slopes. At the colossal glacier you’ll find an ice cave, museum, trails and a train ride to the peak.

If you’re keen to splash out on a truly mesmeric experience, the Telecabine Panoramique Mont-Blanc is a cable car unlikely any you’ve ever seen before. It will transport you across the Alps from Chamonix to Courmeyeur in Italy and the views along the way are mind-blowing.
