Where to go & What to see

Vitosha Mountain, the third highest peak in Bulgaria, is ideal for skiing, hiking, caving and cycling breaks, depending on the time of year. The nearby Boyana Waterfall is also a popular location, as not only is it a beautiful spot in its own right, but it also offers wonderful panoramic views of nearby capital Sofia.

Winter holidays can also be enjoyed at Borovets Ski Resort, nestled between Sofia and Plovdiv, and Bansko Ski Resort, a little further south.

Those who prefer to enjoy the outdoors at a slower pace and without thin straps of wood on their feet will find tranquillity on the stunning Seven Rila Lakes hike, taking in – as the name suggests – the seven lakes located around Bulgaria’s tallest mountain, Rila. The first half of the hike is fairly straightforward, while the second half is a little trickier, but the views at the end more than makeup for the effort. Catch the Rila shuttle service from Sofia for easy access.

But there’s plenty for the culture vultures to enjoy too. The Sir Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia is one of the country’s most iconic sites, while Rila Monastery is among Bulgaria’s most popular cultural sites.

During the summer months, when the weather in Bulgaria is a bit warmer, Action Aquapark at Sunny Beach is a great day out with the kids, while Sunny Beach Luna Park is another good option for family holidays in Bulgaria.

The Beaches

Away from dry land, Bulgaria holidays also offer great scuba diving opportunities in the Black Sea. With its luxurious white sand beaches, Varna is the most popular diving spot, but head to Burgas if you’re looking for cheap holidays in Bulgaria, coupled with quiet beaches and beautifully manicured seafront parks.

Just south of Burgas, Sozopol also boasts blissful sandy stretches, ideal for beach holidays in Bulgaria.
