Where to go & What to see

Innsbruck is a great way to combine both Austria city breaks (well, it’s technically a town) and skiing holidays. Set against the backdrop of spectacular Nordkette mountains, with world-class resorts on the doorstep, Innsbruck has previously hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, so snow sports enthusiasts can be sure it’ll be an incredible trip.

Away from the skiing, Hofkirche gothic church, Goldenes Dachl and Helblinghaus Haus are all beautiful attractions in the Old Town, while you can also enjoy jaw-dropping views by taking a trip on the Hungerburg funicular or to the top of the Bergisel Ski Jump.

Just down the road, you can also pay a visit to the mesmerising Schlegeis Lake.

For more traditional city breaks in Austria, Salzburg and Vienna are both well worth a visit. Packed full of history and culture, you won’t be short of things to do. In Salzburg, Fortress Hohensalzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and Hellbrunn Palace are among the top sights, while in Vienna Schönbrunn Palace, The Hofburg and Belvedere Palace are all Instagram-worthy.

From Salzburg, you can also take a day trip to Eisriesenwelt – the biggest ice cave in the world at 42 kilometres long. Make sure your camera is fully charged because not only is the ice cave itself thoroughly breath-taking, but the journey there is very scenic too.

More incredible vistas can be enjoyed by climbing Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain at nearly 3,800 metres tall. Despite its size, the climb itself isn’t overly challenging, and the rewards at the end are well worth the effort.

Couples, meanwhile, may enjoy a trip to the romantic village of Hallstatt. In such an idyllic setting, it’s impossible not to smile and there are plenty of year-round activities to keep you busy too, whether it’s a hike, cycle ride or swim in the Hallstätter Lake in summer when the weather in Austria is warmer, or winter sports when the temperature drops.
