Mexico Holidays

An Overview

The first thing that springs to mind when thinking of Mexico holidays is the stunning range of beach resorts on offer, but to only consider the country for its sandy beaches and tequilas is to do both Mexico and you a massive disservice.

Where to go & What to see

In fact, holidays in Mexico can be incredibly diverse. From the underrated but bustling Mexico City to the jaw-dropping scenery and opportunities for outdoor adventure, Mexico is more than a Caribbean Sea coastline.

But away from the beaches, Mexico boasts a wealth of stunning sites to explore, not least the 6,500-foot deep Copper Canyon in the north-west. Both deeper and considerably bigger than the Grand Canyon in the USA, Mexico’s version covers 60,000 square miles and with its mountains, rivers and valleys, presents simply once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for outdoor adventure. Head to Parque de Aventura Barrancas del Cobre for the world’s longest zipline, where you’ll whizz across not one but three canyons – Del Cobre Canyon, Tararecua Canyon and Urique Canyon.

The best way to arrive at the Copper Canyon is via a stunning train journey through the Sierra Madre’s foothills on El Chepe, where you’ll be surrounded by pine trees, forests and whopping 30-foot cacti along the way.

If it’s history and culture you’re after, Mexico has ample. An easy daytrip from the bright light of Cancun is Chichen Itza, the most famous Mayan site in the Yucatan. Nearby Coba is also worth a visit. It’s less busy than Chichen Itza, but an older site and you can even climb the steps to the top of Nohoch Mul, the tallest Mayan pyramid in the state.

Often sold as day tour packages, guided visits to the Mayan sites include a stop-off at a local cenote, which are not only beautiful, Instagram-worthy spots but great for a dip to cool off from the heat of the daytime sun.

The Beaches

That’s not to say beach holidays in Mexico aren’t quite rightly a massive attraction for many. The crystal-clear waters, soft sand and fantastic array of resorts, particularly around Cancun, are a draw for families and couples across the world.
