Where to go & What to see

If you’re looking to lap up the culture, Jerusalem will leave you wide-eyed and mesmerised. The Old City is a true bucket-list-worthy destination, with its winding streets and centuries of history embedded deep within the crumbling stone walls. But don’t think it’s confined above ground level. Head below to the Underground City for unique tunnels and historic Jewish sites.

Of course, religion plays a key role in Israeli culture and there are plenty of sites in the capital to experience for yourself. The Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall) represents Judaism’s holiest prayer site, while the gold-plated Dome of the Rock, sitting atop Temple Mount (a holy site for Jews, Christians and Muslims), is one of the world’s most photographed buildings.

Tel Aviv, located on the Mediterranean coast, is a great base for holidays in Israel, as it offers the blissful blend of beach life, culture and entertainment, and good connections to other destinations, including day tours to the Dead Sea.

Tel Aviv Port is the lively centre for nightlife, restaurants and shopping, while Park Hayarkon offers the antidote of peace and tranquility.

The Beaches

Among Tel Aviv’s best beaches – and you’re not short of options – are Banana Beach (ideal for sipping a cocktail and watching the locals play matkot), Dolphinarium Beach (noted for its Friday music festivals), Alma Beach (great for chilling away from the crowds) and Hilton Beach (a popular surfing spot).

But those aren’t the only places for fantastic beach holidays in Israel. Head south to Eilat where you can sun yourself while gazing across the Red Sea to Jordan in one direction, or enjoy the stunning backdrop of the Eilat Mountains in the other. Eilat’s coast is also ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking, while Dolphin Reef Beach is perfect for memorable family holidays in Israel, thanks to the opportunity to swim with dolphins in their natural habitat.

Also not to be missed are Israel’s stunning array of reserves and national parks, stretching from Hai-Bar Yotvata Nature Reserve in the south to Beit She’an National Park in the north, not forgetting the beautiful Baha’i Gardens in Haifa. Masada National Park, steeped in fascinating history and overlooking the Dead Sea, is also well worth a visit.
