Mauritian cuisine is worth the flight time alone. With influences taken from French, English, Indian, Chinese and Creole cultures, food in Mauritius is an absolute melting-pot of mouth-watering options, from biryani to dholl puri, rougaille, vindaye and plenty more.

The island’s capital, Port Louis, is a great place to experience food in Mauritius as you can head to the lively and atmospheric Central Market, where locals shop for fresh produce. The city’s Blue Penny Museum and Citadel of Port Louis are also worth a visit.

Where to go & What to see

Visitors can also learn more about the history and heritage of Mauritius with a trip to the oldest botanic gardens in the southern hemisphere and L’Aventure du Sucre, both located in Pamplemousses.

But, let’s face it, if you’re heading to the island on honeymoon or for a family getaway, beach holidays in Mauritius are what you’ve got in mind.

The Beaches

On the west coast, Flic en Flac is widely regarded as the place to be. It boasts stunningly white beaches with a lively atmosphere to the north, whereas to the south you’ll find luxury resorts with spectacular views of Tamarin Bay. Here, pods of dolphins can regularly be spotted during the morning and it’s also a popular spot for surfers to take to the water.

Also in the town are Tysplash water park and Casela Nature Parks, two perfect spots to enjoy with the kids on family holidays in Mauritius.

On Mauritius’ north coast, you’ll find private islands and secluded beaches. On the east coast, visitors can enjoy some time with the locals in quaint coastal villages. The quieter beaches can be found along the south coast, where the waves are bigger and the cliffs are dramatic.
