TRAVEL BUCKET LIST FOR COUPLES

There’s nothing quite like going somewhere amazing with your favourite person.

Do you share a bucket list with your other half? My first trip away with my now-husband was a weekend break in Dublin, which was not only handily close for nervous first-time flyers but also on both of our bucket lists. The Irish stout for him, the literary connections for me; perfect! And our most recent holiday as a couple (pre kids, so it feels like forever ago!), was a beach break in Cancun, Mexico, where we ticked the incredible site of Chichen Itza off our joint bucket list.

Now, obviously all couples have different tastes but there are some top destinations out there that you should definitely add to your travel bucket list. Here are some of our favourites at Sunny Heart Travel.

Where to go for romantic views

I know, I know, it’s not to everyone’s liking but I couldn’t write about couples’ breaks without mentioning the R word! And it doesn’t get much more romantic than standing hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm or lips-on-lips with an incredible view stretching out before you.
New York: My own personal favourite is from the viewing balcony of the Empire State Building at dusk, looking out over the lights of Manhattan as night draws in. It’s a great time of day to avoid the queues, too. This is one of those moments that great holidays are made of, trust me.

Paris: You’ll get a similar rush at the Eiffel Tower in the heart of the city; especially if you go to the champagne bar right at the top for a glass of bubbly. You can see for miles! It might well be the highlight of your couples’ city break to Paris.

On the beach: Not in the mood for a city stay? Book a couples’ beach holiday with Sunny Heart Travel for glorious views of sand and sea. The world’s most romantic beaches are spread far and wide, from the miles of soft sand on Portugal’s Algarve coast to the unusual pink sands of Harbour Island in the Bahamas. To die for!

Where to go for a pampering

Plenty of hotels around the world have spas, they’re not just for 5-star luxury holidays – phew! And of course you can’t beat a Turkish bath in Turkey or a Thai massage in Thailand. But if you want something a bit different for your next couple’s bucket list holiday, check these out.

Iceland’s hot pools: Aside from tales of giants and fairies, Iceland’s best known for its geology. This land of fire and ice was shaped by the heat of volcanoes and the chill of the near-Arctic climate. It’s that combination that makes the steaming geothermal pools all over the island such a must-do for couples, from the popular Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik to the quieter Secret Lagoon near the Golden Circle. Your skin will love you for it, and you’ll feel refreshed and revitalised by the hot-cold contrast.

Japan’s onsen: In a country of tradition, you have to indulge in a ritual dip in the outdoor onsen (thermal springs) of Japan. They’re not just a relic of the past kept alive for holidaymakers: onsen are popular amongst the Japanese people themselves. You could either visit a public onsen or stay in a ryokan (a traditional inn) next to one for an even more memorable experience. Think tatami mats, green tea, futons and carefully presented meals, just like you might be hoping for from your holiday in Japan.

Where to visit ancient civilisations

You think I’m going to mention the Pyramids and Sphinx, don’t you? Well, yes, the relics of the Ancient Egyptians are mind-blowing, but why not be more adventurous and go somewhere your Aunty Pam hasn’t?

The Incas, Peru: Tucked away on a plateau amid the peaks of the Andes, the city of Machu Picchu is technically more medieval than ancient but what’s a few centuries between friends? It’s an extraordinary place to visit, ruined but somehow complete; its temples, stores and homes connected by countless stone steps. Also an excellent contender for the ‘romantic views’ category!

The Khmer Empire, Cambodia: Perfect for some Lara Croft roleplay, the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park near Siem Reap is the most famous ancient site in Cambodia. Temples are the main attraction, including the magnificent Angkor Wat itself and Ta Phrom, the one that looks like a Spielberg set with all the trees growing over it. A visit here’s the icing on the (wedding?) cake for a couples’ adventure in this fascinating country.
