DESTINATION GUIDE: THE ALGARVE

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, famous for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts.

Portugal’s Algarve region is famous for its spectacular beaches and world-class golf courses, but there’s so much more to see and do during Algarve holidays to keep you coming back year after year.

Firstly, the scenery. Whether gorgeous sweeping golden beaches are your thing, or exploring stunning caves, coves and rock formations, or simply watching yachts pass by a tranquil marina, holidays in the Algarve provide spectacular beauty everywhere you turn.

The region is also packed with historic sites and museums. Some of the best cultural spots can be found in the town of Silves, such as its Moorish sandstone castle which offers breath-taking views, and its charming gothic cathedral.

Those looking for more outdoor adventures won’t be disappointed. In fact, it can be tricky to know how to pack all the stunning spots into one holiday. Soak up the glorious Algarve weather by heading to Ponta de Piedade in Lagos, where you can explore the caves via a boat trip or even a kayaking adventure. Back on dry land, you can also walk the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail – a spectacular clifftop trail hugging the rugged coastline between Portimao and Albufeira.

Albufeira itself is best known for its lively nightlife scene, with plenty of bars and clubs lining ‘the strip’ for young couples and friends to enjoy.

And at the opposite end of the spectrum, there’s also plenty to keep the kids entertained during family holidays in the Algarve. With the wonderful weather in the Algarve, it’s little surprise there are several water parks to help you cool down while having a great day out. Aquashow Park in Quarteira and Slide and Splash in Estombar are the most popular, while Zoomarine Algarve not only offers slides and water rides but also dolphin and seal shows and an aquarium. For a dryer day out, tackle the high ropes courses at Parque Aventura, between Portimao and Faro.

Of course, Algarve beach holidays are the region’s biggest attraction. Not only are there countless beaches to choose from, but they are all thoroughly spectacular. From Praia do Martinhal in Sagres, to Praia do Barranco do Martinho in Lagos and Praia da Rocha in Portimao, the sweeping, sandy beaches stretch the full length of the Algarve coastline.
